Cute Ways to Help Your Cat Beat the Heat

Summer is officially here, and so is the hot weather. If you have a cat, you’ll want to keep a close eye on your furry pal at this time of year. Heat can be very dangerous for Fluffy. Kitties don’t really have an effective way to cool themselves off if they overheat. Therefore, it’s important to keep your feline buddy safe from the heat. Read on as an Indianapolis, IN vet lists some great ways to keep your cute pet cool and comfy this summer.

Water

First and foremost, make sure that your furry little buddy always has lots of fresh water. Some cats prefer to drink running water, while others are purrticularly fond of tap water. If your furball is finicky about her H2O, get her a pet fountain. If you have more than one kitty, and/or a large house, set out multiple water stations.

Kitty Hammock

Hammocks are naturally cooler than regular beds. This is because air can flow beneath them. You can buy your kitty a little hammock, but you can also make one. You’ll need a table or end table with four legs, and a piece of sturdy material. Cut the fabric so that it’s a bit smaller than the tabletop. Then, attach the corners to the legs. Voila!

Ice Hockey

Did you know that cats only sweat through their paws? Fluffy’s cute little ‘toe beans’ are one of the only ways she can regulate her temperature. Try tossing an ice cube down on the floor for your furball to bat around. This can both entertain your cute pet and keep her cool.

Brushing

Brushing your furry friend daily is a great way to spend time with Fluffy and make her feel pampered. It will also remove dead hair and dander from her coat, which will help keep her cooler.

Climate Control

We always recommend keeping cats indoors. Fluffy is both safer and healthier staying inside, where she is protected from cars, weather, and other hazards. Your pet will also be more comfortable in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. If you do let your feline pal out, limit her excursions to mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.
